In a major blow to maritime drug trafficking networks, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) seized approximately 115 kg of cocaine, valued at an estimated Rs 1,150 crore in the international market, during a joint anti-smuggling operation off the Mundra coast in Gujarat.
The intelligence-based operation, conducted between May 25 and 26, was launched following specific and actionable inputs provided by ATS Gujarat regarding suspected narcotics trafficking through the maritime route.

According to officials, ICG interceptor boats, carrying ATS personnel onboard, carried out an extensive search in the Mundra anchorage area. During the operation, security personnel detected suspicious activity linked to a container vessel anchored in the region.
Acting swiftly on the intelligence, the joint team moved to the location and recovered five bags that had been discarded into the sea. Preliminary examination revealed the bags contained packets filled with a white powdery substance that tested positive for cocaine.
Officials said a total of 115 packets, each weighing approximately one kilogram, were recovered, taking the total seizure to around 115 kg. The contraband is estimated to be worth nearly Rs 1,150 crore based on international market assessments.
Following the recovery, the container vessel suspected to be connected to the smuggling attempt was escorted to port for detailed investigation and further legal proceedings.
The operation marks the 15th successful anti-narcotics mission jointly conducted by the Indian Coast Guard and Gujarat ATS over the past five years, highlighting the growing effectiveness of inter-agency coordination in combating maritime crime and drug trafficking.
Officials described the seizure as a significant achievement in safeguarding India’s maritime borders and disrupting international narcotics networks. The successful operation also reinforces the agencies’ commitment to strengthening coastal security and supporting the national campaign for a “Nasha Mukt Bharat” (Drug-Free India).
Further investigations are underway to identify the source, intended destination and wider network linked to the seized consignment.
